Be Part of Research podcast episode 3: Cancer

1.5 minutes

Thanks to research, there has been huge progress in survival rates for cancer. Breast cancer is one of the best examples of this.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. It accounted for 15% of new cancer cases between 2017 and 2019. As a result of research, survival rates have improved dramatically over the last 30 years. We are now in a situation where almost 90% of women with breast cancer live for longer than 5 years following diagnosis.

However, fewer than 20% of patients with lung cancer and pancreatic cancer survive for 5 years following diagnosis.

More research to find better treatments for these patients is needed.

Professor Jon Wadsley is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Weston Park Cancer Centre in Sheffield. He is also the NIHR Research Delivery Network National Specialty and Settings Lead for Cancer.

In this podcast, he speaks to us about:

  • risk factors for cancer
  • what research has found so far
  • why some cancers are more challenging to research than others
  • what's next for cancer research

This podcast was hosted by Turi King, Professor of Public Engagement and Genetics at the University of Leicester.
