This story is adapted from a video originally filmed on 14 March 2023.
Ron, from Bristol, lives with pemphigus, a rare and severe skin blistering condition. When the opportunity arose to take part in a trial looking at a new treatment option, Ron was excited at the prospect of being able to help others.
“I decided to get involved with this study because I was quite poorly and I think that if I can help another person from the results of my study then that has got to be a bonus," Ron explains.
"Hopefully it might result in a cure for people of the future, maybe my own children.”
- Ron
Ron appreciated the welcoming environment, “on arrival, I've been given a cup of tea, for starters.” He reflects on the ease of the appointments with the research nurse who carries out his regular tests of weight, height and bloods, “and then I get this injection into the tummy, which is no problem whatsoever. It takes a minute and a half, job done, then I go home.”
His message to anyone considering taking part in research is simple: "My message to anybody volunteering, I would say go for it."
