Therapist qualities (e.g. empathy) can affect the therapeutic relationship and treatment outcomes and are more important for people with severe mental illnesses (e.g. psychosis). A developing area within psychosis care is the utilisation of briefly trained psychological practitioners (e.g. assistant psychologists) who deliver short interventions. This reduces the resources needed and might make treatments more accessible. Feedback from studies testing this approach has suggested that the personal qualities of these psychological practitioners might be particularly important. Measuring these qualities might ensure that referring clinicians trust practitioners, are willing to refer patients to them and that patients trust the practitioners, too.
Therefore, this study aims to develop and test a screening tool to measure psychological practitioners' personal qualities. The second part of the study will then test whether the scores on the screening tool predict trust ratings given by clinicians towards the therapist.
First, we will develop three roleplay scenarios of three common psychosis patient presentations along with a screening tool questionnaire measuring therapist qualities. Then, we will invite 60 participants with differing therapy experience levels to participate in these roleplays. Their performance will be video-recorded. A group of 10 expert clinicians will then watch some example videos and provide feedback on the screening tool measure. The screening tool will be adjusted according to these suggestions.
The study's second phase will involve an online questionnaire with 180 clinicians. They will watch one randomly selected video and respond to the screening tool, as well as a trust questionnaire along with existing questionnaires on therapist empathy and related qualities.
The data analysis will then assess whether the screening tool is valid and reliable and whether screening tool scores predict trust ratings. This analysis will also show whether screening tool scores differ depending on patient presentation or practitioner training level.
