This study aims to undertake a comprehensive survey of dementia services to understand how these have developed over the last ten years and to consider whether these are ready to deliver new treatments for dementia, for example, Disease Modifying Treatments that may delay the progress of Alzheimer’s disease for some people as well as new investments in early detection of dementia, diagnostic and drug treatment facilities.

We will explore how Multiple Sclerosis services have changed over time to meet the needs of people who can or cannot use Disease Modifying Treatments. This will be used to inform future service design for people with Multiple Sclerosis and identify what dementia services need to consider when providing Disease Modifying Treatments.

We will explore how the organisation and provision of current services matches with the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, which aims to improve patient care by keeping existing staff, recruiting more staff and a better use of technology. Alongside this we will consider the how care is integrated and enabling care to be provided at home as part of Integrated Care Boards, that were introduced in 2022.

Overall, the survey across secondary, primary and social care will help us to understand how community services interact to deliver care and help to identify gaps and learn from what works, as well as what does not. The interviews with people with people with dementia and those with Multiple Sclerosis will explore their experiences in accessing assessments and care, what they value in services and what should be a priority in future service design.
