This information is provided directly by researchers and we recognise that it isn't always easy to understand. We are working with researchers to improve the accessibility of this information.
Heart disease, strokes and breast cancer are highest in deprived areas and are under-diagnosed in women and ethnic minorities.
In this 15-month study we will explore whether hairdressing and beauty salons can increase cardiovascular disease and breast cancer awareness and screening among ethnically diverse women living in South and West London neighbourhoods. Hairdressers and beauty salons, supported by nurses/healthcare assistants (HCAs) at local GP practices, will act as health advocates. They will encourage cardiovascular disease and breast cancer awareness and screening among ethnically diverse women whilst promoting the use of a culturally adapted online tool that will encourage clients to attend GP practices for health check-ups where indicated.
Stage 1 (Readiness) will consult salon staff (hairdressers/beauty therapists),clients, surgery nurses and health care assistants using face-to-face/e-mail questionnaire/interviews,online workshops to develop an action plan, identify culturally appealing content for adaptations of the online tool and how it can be accessed by users.
In Stage 2 (Intervention co-development),salon staff and clients will co-develop the online tool to fit their needs. We will ask clients to use blood pressure monitors at home with telephone support from a practice nurse. We will train hairdressers to use the online tool and simple health promoting messages.
In Stage 3 (Feasibility),we will work with eight salons and four GP Practices. We will see whether salon staff can promote the use of the tool by clients to book and attend their GP for a health check-up. We will ask salon staff and clients about what enabled or prevented use, including any technological, financial or cultural factors, and seek feedback from nurses and surgery staff about their experiences of supporting the hairdressers. We will collect data on recruitment and retainment of salons, salon staff, clients, use of the online tool, and attendance to GP for a check-up.
