The main aim of this study is to determine whether single, or multiple, Faecal immunochemical tests for faecal haemoglobin (F-Hb) and faecal calprotectin (FC) results after an episode of a colorectal condition called acute diverticulitis can be used to risk stratify for further investigations to exclude colorectal cancer. If this is the case it could be used to identify a cohort of patients that don’t need further investigations for colorectal cancer.
The current practice is that this cohort of patients often have further investigation with either a colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy or computerised tomography colonography which are expensive and invasive procedures with potential serious complications, although these are rare. The faecal immunochemical test for Hb (FIT) has be demonstrated to have a very good negative predictive value in both screening and symptomatic clinics for colorectal cancer.
We will also be aiming to evaluate if F-Hb and FC results relate to other important findings in the colon such as high risk adenomas, evaluating the benefit of additionally using age or anaemia (from bloods taken as part of routine clinical care) to risk stratify and to assess the faecal microbiome following an episode of acute diverticulitis and how it changes as the inflammation settles.
