High blood pressure (hypertension) is a major problem worldwide. Blood pressure is created by the force of blood against the vessel, and if this pressure remains continuously high it would put extra strain on the heart and vessels. This can increase the risk of a heart attack, stroke, or even kidney disease. There are medicines available to treat high blood pressure, but this may have side effects. Therefore, it is important to investigate and develop new alternative treatments. There is a chemical called sodium nitrite that has been shown to improve the function of the blood vessel, and we have discovered a new mechanism in how sodium nitrite lowers blood pressure. We would like to test this new mechanism in biopsies and blood samples obtained from healthy volunteers and patients who suffer from high blood pressure so that we can investigate sodium nitrite as an alternative treatment for high blood pressure.
