Background: This series of studies aim to investigate the impact of existing community outreach oral health promotion activities, delivered by the staff and students of the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy (UPDA). UPDA is both a provider of NHS services and undergraduate training for dental professionals. UPDA’s outreach activities include byt are not limited to, supervised school tooth brushing for children in 11 schools in Portsmouth and a basic oral health check to socially disadvantaged adults at various centres in Portsmouth. This research's findings will contribute to the limited knowledge base related to the impact of targeted community oral health programmes. Method: The three studies are; 1: a before and after questionnaire administered to parents/guardians of children receiving school supervised tooth brushing. Starts in Sept 2017(baseline) - Aug 2018 (follow-up) and repeated in 2018/19. The outcome of interest is the changes in knowledge, attitude and practices of dental health for their child following their participation in the programme. 2: at the start of the year 2018, an analysis of the data from the basic oral health check and dental attendance patterns of socially disadvantaged adults who have engaged with the programme. In addition, 10 interviews on a convenience sample from the same participants will be undertaken.3: qualitative interviews of stakeholder perceptions of oral health promotion activities. Stakeholders are the staff of outreach centres and UPDA and students. Interviews (30 mins long) will start Sept 2018. Purposive sampling will be used to ensure each stakeholder groups is interviewed. This will be by phone, at UPDA or an appropriate location. Analysis: Quantitative data will be analysed descriptively and analytically using Chi square tests and independent sample t tests. Thematic analysis will be used for the qualitative data. Results: will be disseminated through reports, research articles, and UPDA website.
