Musculoskeletal disorders continue to take their toll on the quality of life of a large proportion of the world’s population.
Clinicians and scientists at the RJAH are part of the Arthritis Research UK Tissue Engineering Centre and the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries and are a centre for the study of neuromuscular disorders. We wish to collect samples during routine surgeries at the RJAH to study the causes of many of these disorders and work towards developing improvements in diagnoses and therapies.
Cells derived from various orthopaedic tissues are increasingly being used as therapeutic agents to treat a variety of orthopaedic conditions and spinal cord injury. In addition, some of these cells can be used to model these types of injury/ disease in the laboratory for the testing of therapeutic interventions. The main aim of this study will be to use cells isolated from patients undergoing joint surgery to find the best type of cell for a therapy to treat orthopaedic and spinal cord injury patients. We will also use these cells and tissues to study musculoskeletal conditions and disease mechanisms, to develop laboratory models which mimic them and work towards developing improved diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic techniques.
