Disorders of addiction and obsessive compulsive disorder are linked by repeated behaviours despite negative consequences. How these disorders inter¬relate is not understood. Here we focus on the model of habit formation which focuses on learning through associations between cues and responses, and incentive motivation in which cues associated with rewards develop motivating properties. We are investigating the relevance of the models of habit formation and incentive motivation in patients with disorders and addiction and comparing these with obsessive compulsive disorder and healthy volunteers. To investigate these questions, we will use computerized cognitive tasks and functional magnetic resonance imaging to conduct these studies.

A subject will not be eligible for inclusion in this study if any of the following criteria apply: A history of severe neurological deficits or head injury. Clinical diagnosis of a significant DSM Axis one mental disorder, (e.g. schizophrenia, bipolar disorder), not including OCD, substance dependence, or binge eating disorder in the respective patient groups. Comorbidity between these disorders within each group will not be permitted. Past diagnosis of depressive disorder in patient groups will not be grounds for exclusion as this is a common comorbidity with both OCD and addiction spectrum disorders. A history of dependence or substance abuse (not including nicotine for all volunteers, and alcohol or cocaine for substance users) will not be permitted, but previous recreational use of other substances will be tolerated. Positive drug/alcohol screen on the day of the test visit. A minimum list of drugs that will be screened for using urinalysis include amphetamines, antidepressants, cocaine, opiates, cannabinoids and benzodiazepines. Positive results for cannabinoids will be allowed given the long half-life of cannabinoid metabolites. A breathalyser test will be administered to screen for alcohol intoxication
