The research has two aims, namely (1) To compare progression of osteoarthritis between patients who did and did not have cell therapy to treat cartilage defects, and (2) To find predictors for progression of osteoarthritis for those patients who had cell therapy. Part of the study is a retrospective comparison between two groups, namely the first 150 patients treated with cell therapy for cartilage defects at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (Oswestry) and a randomly selected age and gender matched cohort of patients who were treated for cartilage defects in the same period (19982003) using other treatment and who have had a diagnostic MRI scan. To compare progression to OA, we will use ‘need for total knee replacement’ as defining endstage OA. Progression to OA will be quantified using questionnaires. We will use survival analysis (with total joint replacement as end point) and multivariate analysis (using the core set of outcomes) to compare the two treatment groups, adjusting for known risk factors. To find predictors for progression to osteoarthritis among patients who had cell therapy, we will study all patients treated with cell therapy at our hospital and analyze MRI images, biopsy samples and parameters such as age, genderand BMI and investigate their predictive value.
