The NCISH core dataset is a national consecutive case series that examines the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the deaths by suicide of people under the recent care of, or recently discharged from, mental health services. Our aims are to:
collect detailed clinical information on patients of mental health services who die by suicide;
identify factors in the management and care of patients which may be related to suicide;
make recommendations for policy and clinical practice to reduce the number of suicides by people receiving specialist mental health care.
There are three stages to our data collection:
Identify all suicide deaths and deaths of undetermined intent using national mortality data from the Office for National Statistics, National Records of Scotland and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency;
Identify individuals who were in contact with secondary mental health services in the year before their death;
Collect detailed clinical information on these mental health patients via a questionnaire completed by a member of the mental health team who cared for the patient.
Thank you for your interest. However, it is not possible to volunteer to take part. Clinicians will only be asked to complete our NCISH questionnaire (stage 3 of our data collection) if a patient they were responsible for has died by suicide and the patient was in contact with mental health services in the year prior to their death.
Start dates may differ between countries and research sites. The research team are responsible for keeping the information up-to-date.
The recruitment start and end dates are as follows:

You can take part if:
You may not be able to take part if:
As we only include patients who have died by suicide and had been under the recent care of mental health services, it is not possible to volunteer to participate.
Below are the locations for where you can take part in the trial. Please note that not all sites may be open.
