Being creative is what keeps me going. It makes me get up the next day and carry on. The more normal you could make it, the better it is.

[Denise is shown talking to camera with ‘Denise - Lead Research Nurse’ written in the lower third of the screen]
So I met Vaughan when he was first diagnosed.
[Footage of Vaughan in an appointment with Denise. Denise continues to talk]
I've been with Vaughan on-and-off through his whole journey. He's had several lines of chemotherapy, he's had a stem cell transplant and prior to that he had something called BEAM, which is quite an intensive chemotherapy regime.
[Denise is shown talking to camera]
The problem is he relapses, so he gets to remission or he gets partial remission and then the treatment just doesn't work for him anymore.

So then it got down to ‘how long have I got?’
[Vaughan speaks to camera]
When somebody turns around and tells you you could have 2 months, 6 months to live. You take every day as it comes, you sort that day out and then we’ll worry about tomorrow… when it comes.

They managed to get rid of something in 5 months that they couldn’t get rid of in six and a half years. And that to me is… My family, my wife, my kids… we’re going to be forever grateful for that.

[Vaughan is shown talking to camera and showing around his hobby room with many collectable figures]
This is what keeps me sane, or kept me sane! It's my hobby room.

Throughout the whole of my treatment and from having cancer, I’ve never stopped. It’s one of the things, apart from my family that’s really, really kept me going.

[Denise is talking. Footage of Vaughan gardening]
Without this clinical trial, Vaughan was told that he had a few months to a year. We've already given him that year and we know he's now in remission. If he gets another 2 years, another 5 years, this trial has given him an additional 5 years of his life. He knows that he might relapse again. But at the moment, what he knows is he has this period of time where he can enjoy his life.

There's always going to be the thing in the back of my mind that it's still there. Every scan, 3 months, you work up to it and you go, ‘next week, get results… is it going to be okay?’
I think my future...it looks bright. I think more people should get on trials. So if you've got the chance or you get offered a trial, I’d just grab it with both hands.
