This information is provided directly by researchers and we recognise that it isn't always easy to understand. We are working with researchers to improve the accessibility of this information.
Following on from the national General Practice Patient Survey (GPPS), the University of Exeter Medical School (in collaboration with the University of Cambridge) is investigating patients’ experiences and views of out-of-hours primary care, that is, GP care provided outside of normal GP opening hours. Although there is a small section of the GPPS that is concerned with out-of-hours care, these questions have not yet been tested in detail with adult patients who have recent experience of this service.
The aim of the research is to gain a better understanding of patients’ responses to the national survey questions in the light of their recent experiences of out-of-hours care and to investigate how the service can be improved for their benefit.
The study will involve two stages. The first stage will be split into two parts. The first part will take place in two out-of-hours providers and will include ‘cognitive’ interviews with around 20 patients. Participants will be asked about the relevance of out-of-hours questions from GPPS when thinking about their recent experience of service. This work will be followed by a further four out-of-hours services (six in total) undertaking a patient survey using the out-of-hours items from the GPPS combined with an existing, detailed survey called the Out-of-hours Patient Questionnaire (OPQ). Each service will then receive a report of the survey findings from their patients.
The second stage will include interviews with out-of-hours services who participated in the first stage, and with six new services, recruited across England. They will be asked to comment on their requirement for and use of the patient feedback in the development of their services. In this way we hope to ensure that we collect suitable data from patients that can be used to inform the development of a constructive intervention for improving the care that they provide.
